Wine and Greece share a common history as it has been producing wine for more than 3000 years. Greeks played an important part in the vine expansion throughout the Mediterranean region.

Greece's vineyard and its 300 different grape varieties spread over more than 136 000 ha and produce about 3 500 000 hl of wine, mainly white wines (60%) with red and rosés (40%).

The main wine-growing regions, in order of importance, are : Peloponnese, Crete, Macedonia and Thrace, Thessaly and the Aegean Sea islands.
