Rare wine, 2009 vintage

Understanding the qualities of a vintage such as 2009 means studying the particular weather conditions which gave this year's wine its exceptional nature. 2009 was one of the hottest years since 1900, especially in the south of France, with much more sunlight than normal. A particularly mild spring came after this year's cold winter, followed by a very hot summer and an unusually warm fall.

These weather conditions gave most french wines specific characteristics, making 2009 a high-quality vintage and a benchmark.

Bordeaux wines are therefore very similar in quality to those from 2005 (one of the best) and the vintage is deemed excellent. The weather led to a lower yield of Rhône wines, largely offset by their long-keeping quality. Red Bourgogne wines benefitted from these conditions with soft tannins and amplified fruit aromas, whereas white wines are slightly inferior in spite of their generosity. The Alsace region produced a much more powerful vintage than usual thanks to this exceptionally sunny weather, which increased the alcohol level in the wine. Red Loire wines and Southwest wines are as remarkable. The champagne is of a slightly lower quality than the previous years.
