Rare wine - Vintage 1946

1946 produced a weak vintage everywhere in France.

Bordeaux produced quite tough, acidic and tannic red wines due to late and disrupted flowering as well as heavy rainfalls which destroyed the vineyard in late september.

With heavy and uninterrupted rainfalls, the hope of producing excellent wines was destroyed, especially on the right bank.

Though very modest, the 1946 Bordeaux vintage is not quite catastrophic.

In Bourgogne, the vineyards were not spared. Difficult flowering combined with a cold, rainy month of august and a september heatwave led to millerandage and chaptalization of the wines.

Same goes for Champagne and Vallée du Rhône : their wines are unattractive and weak.

If you wish to purchase a good 1946 wine, opt for a Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion, Vieux Château Certan or Château d’Yquem which are all very suitable for important celebrations.
