2006 is a mythical vintage for winemakers and lovers of good wine. Rainfalls and weather setbacks of that year left wine professionals puzzled about their harvest. July’s hailstorms and August’s rainfalls led to late harvests, some until early fall. However, it makes it an exceptional vintage. Southwest, Provence and Corse vineyards were, in a manner of speaking, « survivors » of this unpredictable weather.
And yet, 2006’s wines are quite delicate, flowery and tasty. Especially Jura’s yellow wine (Vin Jaune) and white Ruinart. In Bordeaux, 2006 stands out with strong tannins, though not every grape variety managed to produce a wine which did not suffer from the increased water intake. In Bourgogne, 2006 was particularly indulgent with Chablis. Finally, if you ever get the chance to taste a 2006 Hermitage or Côte Rôtie, take some time to appreciate their unique aromas because Champagne had a very hard time with this particular year.
Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. Great wine from Vallée du Rhône.
Pomerol appellation. Great Bordeaux wine. Bottled at the Château.
