Rum is a processed eau-de-vie from the United States, produced from sugar cane or by-products from the sugar industry. Depending on whether it is consumed white, barrel-aged or spiced, its color varies from light to dark amber. Agricultural or industrial rum, it all depends on the ingredients used when produced.
Historically, sugar cane was brought to America by the Spanish people in the 15th century thanks to Christophe Colomb's travels, and was first distilled in the Antilles in the 18th century. Rum is then used on ships for its « claimed » medicinal vertues and is used as exchange currency during the Slave Trade in Africa. It spreads in Europe and North America in the 18th century.
