Rare wine - Vintage 1931

Just like 1930, the 1931 vintage was quite disappointing for all french regions.

The weather conditions did not promote a good harvest in Bordeaux. The 1931 summer was very cold and damp, and so even with a late harvest, the grapes lacked in maturity.

However, a few red wines managed to stand out : Château Latour and Château Lafite Rothschild for example. The quality of these wines is decent with beautiful colors. The Bordeaux white wines are however very disappointing.

Same goes for Sauternes which produced more or less disappointing wines.

Bourgogne did not do any better due to a rainy summer and a lack of maturity of the grapes. The 1931 Bourgogne wines are however very powerful in aromas.

Vallée du Rhône also suffered from the rainy weather, and even if the month of september was overall quite sunny, very fine wines are almost impossible to find in this region.

No french region was very successful and the 1931 vintage is far from memorable since it is overshadowed by the success of its predecessors, 1928 and 1929.

If you wish to purchase a 1931 bottle, you might want to opt for a sure bet : Château Angelus or Château d’Yquem.
