With a size matching its excellence, the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation has 9 grands crus : Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin ; and 26 first growths. Interesting fact, Napoleon was famous for drinking only Clos de Bèze.
Main grape varieties : Pinot noir.
Soils : Hard rock, covered by a thin layer of brown silty soil in the heights, marl and limestone rock in the slope.
Style of wines :
Bright color in their youth, from dark red to cherry black for these powerful, fruity and tannic wines with an exceptional ageing potential. Nose with notes of blackcurrant, cherry, raspberry, cocoa, coffee and undergrowth. In the mouth, amplitude and texture take over. Grands Crus Classés rarely disappoint and often compete with first growths like Clos-Saint-Jacques.
