This large appellation of 1467 ha represents, with Hermitage, the northern AOCs of Vallée du Rhône. Expanded in the 1950s to combine the region's similar lands, it produces quality wines with excellent value for money. Its great white wines are produced locally, composed mostly of marsanne, opulent grape varity aged in oak barrels.
Main grape varieties : Syrah for red wines ; marsanne and roussane for white wines.
Soils :
Depending on the terroirs ; Chassis (mostly) : sandy-clay alluvium, in the north : granit (like Hermitage), Larnage area : kaolin (white clay)
Style of wines :
Wines from the Chassis area : delightful balance between full-bodied, fruity aromas and a great suppleness of the body.
Wines from granit and kaolin areas have a greater ageing potential and are characterized by tannins with animal nuances.
